The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role of depression in the association between smoking behavior and suicidal ideation among adolescents in multicultural families in South Korea, with particular attention given to investigating the gender difference in the mediating role of depression. Using data from the 2016 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, this study utilized regression models to analyze the association between smoking behavior and suicidal ideation, the mediating role of depression, and the gender difference in the mediating role of depression. The results showed that smoking behavior was positively associated with a higher likelihood of having suicidal ideation among adolescents in multicultural families. It was also found that multicultural adolescents’ depression partially mediated the association between smoking behavior and suicidal ideation. In addition, the mediating role of depression in the association between smoking behavior and suicidal ideation was found for female adolescents, but not for male adolescents. Based on the findings, social work implications were provided for addressing and preventing suicide-related behavior among adolescents in multicultural families.
