William Cullen Bryant was born at Cummington, Massachusetts on November 1794. As he lived in a rural district, he naturally came into contact with nature early in his life. His love for nature led him to take his poetic material from the nature and express his thoughts by means of nature. He didn’t imitate British poets and asserted that American poets should write on their nature in their own perspective. He practiced his own assertion expressing American characteristics found in American nature. That’s why he is thought to be the bridging poet between colonial poets and New England poets.
In “Thanatopsis”, whose meaning is a meditation on death, Bryant explains his view on death variously. He sometimes thinks death is a retirement from life. Life is composed of good things and bad things. By death people retire from the troublesome lives and enter into a resting place. That is to say, the death is taking a rest in nature.
The body is buried in the ground and dissolved into the four elements, that is, soil, water, fire and wind. As this procedure has been repeated from time immemorial, the earth is a great sepulcher itself. Everything is born in the earth and all the living creatures including human beings return to the earth in the end. Returning to the earth is called death.
The idea is not that of a Christian nor a Puritan nor a Unitarian, though he was grown up in the milieu of Puritanism and converted into Unitarianism in the long run. Bryant’s view on death is very similar to that of Deism and Pantheism. Though he seems not to have learned or known Buddhism, some part of his view on death is very similar to that of Buddhism too.
