Sustainable Development has become an important issue among major hotels in the world and there is a growing need to introduce more sustainable practices in hotel operations. In this context a need for ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) is being consistently proposed in hotel management education. This study explores the current status and the need for ESD in hotel management education in Korea through a questionnaire survey. An empirical study of 431 students from three Korean universities in Seoul, metropolitan cities and local areas revealed that the current teaching level of ESD in hotel majors was much lower than the demand level, indicating that there is much need to introduce more ESD in hotel majors. Among many themes in ESD, international understanding, multicultural understanding, conflict resolution, and corporative responsibility were shown to be most important subjects to be taught in terms of their current emphasis in teaching and students`` high demand for teaching. The ESD subjects like gender equity, human rights, disaster prevention, eco-friendly energy, wastes and recycling are also needed to be taught as the students rated those subjects as being highly demanded but least taught in hotel curricula. Based on a correlation analysis between the number of courses taken in relation to sustainable development and the demand for ESD, it is also suggested to integrate ESD themes in traditional teaching of hotel management and to open a new subject that directly deals with ESD in hotel curricula.
