The purpose of this paper is to forecast international tourism demand for the 2002 World Cup Korea-Japan and estimating its economic impact on the Korean economy by using an input-output model. The results of the study predicted 691,700 of foreign tourists for the period of the World Cup in June 2002, of which 322,100 were football tourists and 369,600 were ordinary tourists. Foreign tourism receipts were estimated at US$905 million including $422 million from football tourist receipts for the World Cup period. The input-output analysis indicates that foreign tourism receipts of $905 million by football and ordinary tourists would generate $2,549 million of output, $620 million of income, $1,341 million of value added, $108 million of government revenues, and 77,373 full-time equivalent jobs throughout the Korean economy. Also, football tourist receipts of $422 million were estimated to generate $1,187 million of output, $289 million of income, $624 million of value added, $50 million of government revenues, and 36,030 full-time equivalent jobs. Analysis of substitution effect shows that foreign tourism receipts of $905 million would produce the same economic value as 86,628 cars exported by the automotive industry, 5.5 World Cup stadiums built by the construction company, or 2.9 times the World Cup operating costs of Korea. Also, football tourist receipts of $422 million would be equivalent to 40,340 passenger cars, 2.5 World Cup stadiums, or 1.4 times the World Cup operating costs of Korea.
