This study examined how immigration or optimism affected coping strategies of Korean Americans through comparative study of coping strategies among Korean, Korean American, and Caucasian American old women. Data were collected from 378 community-dwelling women over the age of 65. Results showed that there were different patterns in coping strategies among three ethnic groups. Koreans and Korean Americans tended to use more avoidant copings than did Caucasian Americans. In addition, optimism guided their coping strategies. For Koreans and Korean Americans, higher optimism was associated with more frequent use of problem-focused copings, while for Caucasian Americans higher optimism was related to less frequent use of avoidant copings. The findings concluded that optimism as a personal factor had more impacts on coping strategies of Korean American older women than immigration as a situational factor. Implications for health and social service and study limitations were discussed.
