Ageism can be seen as a process of systematic stereotyping and discriminating against the elderly, just as sexism and racism, accomplish this with gender and skin color. The concept of ageism is becoming more important in the social work profession. Insights on ageism can provide new perspective in understanding and responding to the needs and problems of the elderly. The elderly in Korea and the United States suffer from personal and institutional prejudice and discrimination. They are oppressed groups and experience the consequences of oppression through ageism. However, discussion of ageism has been very limited in Korea. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of ageism and suggest implications for social work. It defines ageism as an aspect of oppression and reviews how ageism is manifested toward the elderly, applying five faces of oppression - exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. Also, the effects of oppression are discussed. The findings indicate that the elderly in Korea and the United States experience all aspects of oppression to some degree, but marginalization and cultural imperialism have the greatest impact. Traditional attitudes and values are gradually losing their power and the problem of ageism is increasing in Korea, as it is in the United States. Social work has an important role in addressing the issues of ageism on two levels, empowerment of the elderly as individuals and as a community, and facilitating change within society as a whole. Implications for social work on issues of ageism are further discussed.
