The main purpose of this Paper is to examine differences in mental health between the married and unmarried community-dwelling Canadian elderly. The possibilities of introducing government-led long-term care system are becoming a worldwide concern for meeting the needs of frail elderly. However, The current demographic trends such as the shrinkage of family caregivers and on an emphasis on family of caring for the chronic elderly lends to the importance of assistance from one`s spouse. Although specific mechanisms for effects of marriage on positive mental health are not well-known, the married elderly tend to have better mental health than unmarried elders. This paper assumes that the concept of social support serves to moderate the mental health among married/unmarried elderly. Quantitative social support generally lowers level of stresses which in turn has positive impact on mental health in later life. In addition to quantitative social support, qualitative social support such as availability of confident may also have on equal effect of better mental health. These two intervening factors are hypothesized to explain the differences in mental health among the married and unmarried elderly living in Canada. The gross effect of marital status is assessed with a five-item Mental Health Index and a set of control variables. Also, the net effect of marital status is evaluated by inclusion of social support. Sequential multiple regression model is used to predict mental health outcome in later life. As expected, it is found that married persons tend to lower level of negative mental health. Unmarried individuals are in lower income, older, and fewer availability of quantitative social support. However, the results of this study fails to confirm the hypothesis that the outcome of mental health is predicted by marital status through a social support moderator. The overall findings of this study highlight the mental health needs for those living without spousal supportive system.
