Korean society has recently experienced a rapid aging of its population. The increase in the number of older people with chronic illness, as the number of older people increases, calls our attention to such issues as who cares for those elderly, and how? Family has served as the major source for long-term care for the elderly in various countries including Korea. The primary caregiver is usually a woman in the family, but the social circumstances around women, families, and older people has been changing. Especially, the increase of women`s participation in labor force has a profound impact on the situations of family caregiving. The purpose of this article is to deepen our understanding on how employment and caregiving are related with each other among women who are the primary caregiver for the elderly, and thus to explore the effective way of improving the quality of life among caregivers and older people. The literature review helps us understand how employment affects the caregiving stress among women caregivers. The comparison of employed caregivers with unemployed caregivers suggests the positive impact of employment among caregivers. It might be that multiple roles enhance the availability of caregiving resources and the capability of caregivers themselves. However, the comparison of those who are caregivers and those who are not among employed women reveals that the additive caregiving role has a negative impact on job performance of employed women. Time conflict, overload, role conflicts, and ambiguity in cultural norm about elder care role are those which are identified to contribute to the poor job performance among employed caregivers. Important are to distinguish care manager role from care provider role. Care manager arranges various types of services to meet the needs of their older parents by purchasing them in market, while care provider herself supply all the services. There are differences between cue managers and care providers in ways to accommodate their job schedule to meet the caregiving responsibilities, suggesting that care managers have more flexibility and better adjustment in their job. Policies for the elderly in Korea have limitations in that those policies could not fully reflect the changes in situations which women, families, and older people reside in. The literature review on women`s employment and family caregiving suggests the several implications for policies for the elderly.
