In this paper, we experimentally investigated the effects of passive control device on the aerodynamic performance of a flat plate airfoil. The research was carried out with a simple three-dimensional (3-D) rectangular wing with elliptical leading and trailing edges. As a passive control device, we attached the cylindrical tripwires of varying widths and thicknesses, and angle of attacks of 0°∼20° were used to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics (e.g. lift and drag forces) of the wing. Futhermore, we mimicked the geometry of flat plate wing from the nature (mimicked to the wing tip of bird, leading edge protuberance of humpback whale). We found that attaching the tripwires to the lower surface of the wing enhanced the lift force and increased the lift-to-drag ratio for low angle of attack. However, attaching the tripwires to the upper surface tended to have the opposite effects. Moreover, we found that the protuberance of the leading edge enhanced the lift force before stall occurs. Futhermore, when we controlled the wing tip like wedge and protuberance of leading edge, the lift force also enhanced before stall occurs. The aerodynamic characteristics of the flat-plate wing with tripwires or geometrical control can be used to develop passive control devices for aircraft wings in order to increase their aerodynamic performance when gliding at low angle of attack.
