Social robot researchers seek inspiration from the field of animation to fulfill the emerging requirements for robots as companions. The aim of this study was twofold: to highlight the influences of animation industry on social robotics and to investigate the benefits of applying lessons from the field of animation to social robot designs. The present study identified both aesthetic and technical considerations of designing social robots through the literature review of 34 social robot research inspired from the field of animation. The focus of the artistic approach is to achieve goals such as the illusion of life, clarity, expressiveness, robot acceptance, safety, natural interaction, and efficient collaboration between human and robots by applying the concept of believability, animation principles or practices to social robot designs. The technical inspiration was derived from motion creation techniques or tools such as key-framing or user interfaces used in computer animation software that was expected to facilitate expressiveness of robots and collaboration between artists and engineers using robot animation tools. In addition, the design process or methods such as gesture sketches, storyboard, and video-prototyping were employed in social robot designs for discussion and agent evaluation including economic feasibility. Social robot researchers convince that insight from animation can be beneficial for social robots with abstract form or limited modality. Overall, these findings show that animation research could be used in other field sharing the identical goal of the illusion of life.

소셜 로봇 분야는 애니메이션 분야로부터 영감을 얻고 있다. 인공지능 기술이 일상으로 들어오면서 동반자로서 로봇의 역할이 크게 요구되기 때문이다. 본 연구의 목표는 소셜 로봇 분야에서 활용되고 있는 애니메이션 연구의 유형을 파악하고 그 활용 목적을 분석하여 다른 산업적 분류에 속하는 두 분야가 어떻게 융합되고 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있는지를 구체적으로 제시하는 데 있다. 연구 목표를 위해 소셜 로봇 디자인에서 애니메이션으로부터 영감을 받은 34편의 논문을 분석한 결과, 애니메이션 분야는 소셜 로봇 분야에 예술적 영감과 기술적 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 예를 들어 로봇의 외관과 움직임 디자인 측면에서 그럴듯함 개념을 비롯해 애니메이션의 로봇 캐릭터 사례, 애니메이션 원리가 활용되는 것이다. 소셜 로봇 연구자는 예술적 관점에서 애니메이션 이론이나 연구의 활용으로 삶의 환영뿐 아니라 로봇의 수용, 표현력, 명료성, 예측 가능성, 안전, 접근 가능성, 인간과 효율적이고 자연스러운 상호작용과 같은 긍정적인 결과를 기대할 수 있다고 보았다. 기술적 접근은 키 프레이밍이나 컴퓨터 애니메이션 소프트웨어의 사용자 환경과 같은 모션 시스템에서 영향을 받아 로봇의 표현력뿐 아니라 아티스트와 엔지니어 간의 협업이 쉽게 이뤄지는 데 초점을 두었다. 더불어 제스처 연구나 스토리보드, 비디오 프로토타이핑과 같은 애니메이션 제작과정이나 디자인 방법을 소셜 로봇 디자인 과정에 적용한 사례도 있었다. 이러한 디자인 접근으로 완전한 로봇 제작 전에 미리 평가가 가능해 이를 디자인에 반영할 수 있으므로 로봇의 완성도를 높일 뿐 아니라 경제적인 효과도 얻을 수 있다고 보았다. 연구 결과, 소셜 로봇 분야에서 애니메이션 분야의 영향력은 주로 움직임 표현과 표현 기술에서 확인되었다. 이는 로봇의 움직임이 감정표현과 의사소통에 강력한 수단으로 기능하며 이용자의 안전에도 직결되기 때문으로 판단된다. 애니메이션 분야는 삶의 환영이라는 같은 목표를 공유하는 다른 산업 분야로 그 연구가 확장될 수 있는 잠재성이 있다.
