The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of artistic value and appreciation of dance, which brought with it dramatic change to the history of korean dance. First, I attempt to define the concept and characteristics of the New Dance and to trace its process of development. During the first period, 1910-1925, as our traditional dance began to be performed on westernized stages, indoor theaters were brought into play as a new element of dance. This brought about changes in the understanding of dances, and bacame the foundation for the growing New Dance. In the second period, 1926∼1935, the real ere of New Dance began with Lee Shi Lee Pa Ku`s performance in Kyunghoedang, Seoul. This was the seminal period of the New Dance, when artists tried to introduce theatrical art, changes in space from sitting room dance, and imported forms of western New Dance. The third period, 1936∼1945, socially and politicaiiy a difficult time, but dancers like Choe Seung-hee and Cho Tae-kwon labored to produce creative works of traditional dance, and they conducted the theatrical art campaign. Their performances also received the highest evaluations of overseas audiences. We can regard this as a developmental period of New Dance. The New Dance of Korea began under the rule of Japanese imperialism, but could not develop any concrete methodology due to a general lack of understanding of modem dance, disorganization of individual artists, and the narrow focus on stage dances. We can, however, place a high value on its artistic in that it was an artistic dance form quite distinct from any foreign dance. It can be said that the most artistic value of the New Dance lies in the pursuit of dance as an art.
