In the earlier writings of The Chinese Repository, ‘knowledge’ is the central concept in examining and assessing perceptions on China and the China-West relationship. This writing examines some of the notable characteristics of the thoughts and perspectives on ‘knowledge’ as revealed in the early introductory remarks, especially in terms of the religious revivalism of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The religious revivalism as a movement manifested a strong Christian identity, but it also progressed in close relationship with the era’s intellectual thoughts and existential · social demands, exercising strong influence upon not only Europe but also American society in general for over a century, affecting the individual, social, and spiritual realms.
Dispatching Protestant missionaries to China and publishing The Chinese Repository in the early 19th century are among the fruits of the movement. Missionaries such as Robert Morrison and Elijah Coleman Bridgman experienced ‘an individual conversion’ and became determined to devote themselves to the missionary work in China. Also, the issuing of The Chinese Repository became possible due to the meeting of the two missionaries.
When focusing on the movement’s relevance to The Chinese Repository, this movement’s effects are most visible mainly in the early introductory remarks, as these remarks reveal the viewing of knowledge in terms of power and influence, the belief that assumes the spreading of knowledge as a way to the gospel dissemination and soul winning, the tendency to link the intellectual · moral improvement to the religious improvement, the perspective that finds superiority of humanity in human beings’ intellectual capacity, and the biblical interpretation of language which views having different languages as a barrier to communication. This writing particularly investigates these effects in the relationship between ‘the coming of the Christian Millenium and protestantism’ and ‘the incident of the Tower of Babel and the advent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.’ This writing also focuses on the independent, pioneering, and individual characteristics that mark the ways the missionaries worked during this time and scrutinizes the relationship between these characteristics and the theology and the spiritual traits of the religious revivalism of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
