The aim of this study is to investigate feasibility and methodology of the indoor navigation (GPS-free) for blind people using beacon-smartphone communication. Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are an estimated 285 million blind people worldwide. The most commonly used primary mobility aids are a white cane and a guide dog and an advanced supportive navigation service as an orientation tool used along with other skills to augment the user experience and reassure its users. Method: In this work, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) beacons are adopted for communicating with a smartphone in the pocket and triggering instructions at the appropriate time. Usually, beacons are implemented at POIs (position of interests) and junctions of braille guide blocks, and near-the-beacon-or-not decision making algorithm is developed based on probabilistic theories. The beacon signal analysis is also performed in advance. Results: Using the experimental data from commercial beacons, feasibility of using beacons for blind navigation is validated. Though the characteristics of beacon signals is highly nonlinear and contains lots of uncertainties, our proposed algorithm well resolves those demerits. Conclusion: To support the mobility of blind people in the indoor environment, beacon signals are analyzed and relevant decision making algorithm is developed. Application: The probabilistic decision making framework is also able to adopt additional sorts of information such as human factors, signal processing and other sensor measurements.
