In Portuguese, vowel length is not contrastive and thereby all vowels have one mora. But all vowels don`t have equal durations, being stressed vowels longer than unstressed vowels and the increased duration of the stressed vowels appear to be due to phonological lengthening. Furthermore, primary stress assignment in Portuguese that has no vowel length contrast is assumed by some researchers to be quantity-insensitive, for coda consonants add no weight to syllable, while others maintain Portuguese stress assignment is quantity-sensitive with regard to the contribution coda consonants make to syllable weight. On the basis of Phonology-Phonetics Convergence Theory which correlates moraic structure not only to phonological syllable weight but to phonetic duration, comparative analyses between durational patterns of vowels in open syllables show differences in mora number that these vowels have and comparative examinations of durations of both vowels in closed syllables and vowels in open syllables reveal whether they occupy a mora of their own or share a mora with following coda consonants. In order to account for two above-mentioned issues, based on the Convergence Theory, in Portuguese primary stress assignment, this study conducts a phonetic experiment, aiming: first, to demonstrate whether stressed vowels in open syllables are at least twice as long as unstressed vowels in open syllables in all positions within the 3 Syllable Window and are considered to be subject to phonological lengthening and to have consequently 2 moras and, second, to determine whether coda consonants contribute to syllable weight by having a mora of their own. The experiment consisted of comparing durations of stressed vowels in open syllables with those of unstressed vowels in open syllables and of examining comparatively durations of stressed vowels in closed syllables and those of unstressed vowels in open syllables. The findings of this experiment are: first, stressed vowels are at least twice as long as unstressed vowels, second, stressed vowels in open syllables show no differences in any of three positions and, third, stressed vowels in closed syllables demonstrate no differences regardless of those positions. In conclusion, this study proves that the primary stress assignment in Portuguese is quantity-sensitive and the lengthening of stressed vowels is phonological.
