Purpose: A wide range of management styles are explored to protect the decline of the low-rise residential areas and to maintain their residential environments in good condition. Even though a variety of pilot projects are promoted with the public supports, the residents’ active efforts to maintain the residential environments are required to make them succeed. This study aims to analyze Japanese resident-led town management cases and draw implications. Method: The precedent research on the programs and the projects which were introduced for the management of the low-rise residential area were reviewed and their achievements and issues were identified. The concept and characteristics of area management in Japan were examined and a case study on the active resident-led management of Utsukushigaoka and Teriha was conducted to analyze the processes and the activities including the roles of the organizations and the management methods. The implications for the successful management are as follows; Result: Firstly, the systematic support by the public is essential for the formation of a resident organization. Secondly, responsibilities and limitations should be clarified by establishing the management rules relevant to the current issues of the area. Finally, the organizational capability of the residents needs to be strengthened to cultivate the resident-led management ability and financial resources should be stably secured to keep the continuity without the public support.
