Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is a typical summer bird widely distributed in Korea, but the ecological information of this species is insufficient. This study was conducted in Gwangju metropolitan city during the 2013 breeding season in order to identify the habitat characteristics, home range and potential prey. In the breeding area, the residential area was about 5~10%, the farmland was 27~52.7% and the river was 10~15%. The home range area ranged from 800,271 to 842,695㎡, and the most land use in home range was farmland (42.2~53.2%). Most of the potential preys were Insecta, and non-insect species such as Araneae were also collected. Among the insects, Diptera was the most common species with 48.3%, following Hymenoptera 24.7%, Coleoptera 10.7%, Hemiptera 3.0%, Lepidoptera 1.8%, Odonata 1.5% and Homoptera 0.7%. This study may be worthwhile as preliminary pilot research for Barn Swallow conservation, management, and further studies.
