The aim of this essay is to understand how Confucian theory of Yin-yang 陰陽 describes woman's emotion by analyzing the books of Naehun 內訓 and Yeosaseo 女四書. According to the Confucian theory of Yin-yang, we need to have proper emotion to be a virtuous person. Further the theory thinks that women have passive emotions than men because they originates from Yin. In the theory, women are recommended to develop love as an affirmative emotion for others and self-humiliation as a negative emotion for themselves, but to carefully control hate as a negative emotion for others and pridefulness as an affirmative emotion for themselves. In this regard, women are expected to have affirmative emotions for others such as devoted love for their husband (yeol 烈), filial piery (hyo 孝), love for their children (ja 慈), and intimacy with familial members (chin 親); to have negative emotions for themselves such as chastiry (jeong 貞), fideliry (jeol 節), purity (cheong 淸), and obedience (sun 선 順). However women are not recommended to develop negative emotions for others such as anger (bun 忿 and no 怒), resentment (su 讐), contempt (neung 凌), and disregard (kyeong 輕); to develop affirmative emotions for themselves such as arrogance (o 敖), pleasure (lak 樂), display (kua seung 夸勝), joy (yeol 悅), and laziness (ta 惰). Accordingly, women are hard to get opportunity to acquire socially equal self and morally autonomous agent because they are relatively wanting in negative emotions for others and affirmative emotions for themselves.
