The consilience proposed by E. Wilson is in fact a new project to unify sciences. The consilience, as it were, succeed to the idea of the unification of sciences executed by the Enlightenment and the Logical Positivism. But these two had ended in a failure. Hence the consilience tried to unify sciences in conformity to the evolutionary biology, to overcome the weak points implicated in the theoretical systems of the Enlightenment and the Logical Positivism. Nevertheless this consilience project has been confronted by many kinds of the objection: refutation to the reductionism, opposition to abandon traditional division of labor in various sciences, criticism on the political ideology implicated in that project etc. But these are not sufficient to pull down the consilience project. For these are based on the other language game than what the consilience is based on. If we would raise an objection to the consilience, we ought to work out a strategy by which the logical aporia in the theoretical system of the consilience disclosed. In this paper I pointed out a logical incoherence involved in the theoretical system of consilience. It was that the consilience contains two theses incompatible: the one is that the unification of sciences will give an evolutionary benefit to human species and the other is that the consilience may incur an evolutionary loss to human species. Even though the consilience overcomes the very logical incoherence, it surely confronts with another fault: the consilience can not make a counterattack the objections based on the other language game than what the consilience is based on. In this respect, the consilience seems to be not an unified science but a science founded on a language game.

윌슨이 제안한 통섭은 사실상 계몽주의와 논리실증주의의 학문통합 이념을 계승한 새로운 학문통합 프로젝트이다. 『통섭』에서 윌슨은 모든 학문의 주제들을 진화생물학의 원리에 따라 설명할 수 있도록 그 기초를 다시 조직함으로써 계몽주의와 논리실증주의의 한계를 극복하고 명실상부한 학문통합을 성취할 수 있다고 주장했다. 지금까지 통섭에 대한 많은 반론들이 제기되었다. 환원주의에 대한 반론, 학문들의 기능 통합에 대한 반대, 통섭의 정치적 함의에 대한 비판 등이 그것이다. 그러나 이 반론들은 모두 통섭의 이론체계 외부의 논거에 의거한 반론들이며 통섭과는 다른 언어게임에 준거하는 주장들로서, 통섭에 대한 결정적인 반론이 될 수 없다. 이에 논자는 통섭의 논리에 내재하는 하나의 난점에 주목했다. 윌슨은 통섭이 인간 종의 진화적 이점을 제공한다고 주장하지만 진화생물학의 원리에서 볼 때 그런 식으로 학문을 통합하는 것은 오히려 인간 종의 진화적 손실을 초래할 수도 있다는 것이 그것이었다. 통섭이 이러한 내재적 난점을 극복한다 하더라도, 다른 언어게임에 준거한 반론들이 제기될 수 있다는 사실은 또 다른 의미에서 통섭의 한계를 드러낸다. 통섭이 그러한 반론들에 대해 자기 자신을 규정하는 언어게임에 입각하여 재반박하는 것은 원리상 불가능하다는 것이 그것이다. 이러한 점에서 통섭은 유일한 통합학문이 아니라 진화생물학이라는 하나의 언어게임에 입각한 하나의 세계관으로 이해되어야만 한다. 이것은 자연과학·사회과학·인문학의 모든 문제들이 진화생물학의 원리에 따라 설명될 수 있다 하더라도 이러한 사실이 진화생물학에 준거한 학문의 통합을 정당화하는 충분한 근거가 될 수는 없다는 것을 의미한다.
