New Round has already been prearranged at the Uruguay Round t and its main strategic conflicts are centered on the liberalization of agricultural trade between importing and exporting countries. Considering the extreme sensitivity and short history of multilateral negotiations of this sector, the scope for successive result from the negotiations seems by no means great. Moreover, the obvious conflicts between the two super powers, United States and tire European Union, on various issues may lead to significant weakening of the leadership role of the Round, eventually threatening the future of the WTO multilateral trading system itself: ASEM is not well positioned to aggressively and successfully pull the negotiations because of divergent interests between its member countries and the weak geopolitical relationship in the tri-polar trade relations. However, it is possible that the ASEM may contribute to some extent to bringing about a succesful conclusion of the negotiations by reconciling conflicting interests between its member countries and by checking somewhat unreasonable U.S. attitude and control toward the negotiations. As long as it could manage to construct such a cooperative scheme at this moment, ASEM will be able to find a great opportunity for its future development, based on which the balance and stability of . the tri-polar system could be guaranteed, which will then greatly contribute to establishment of a basis for a sound multilateral trading system and for the stability of the world economy.
