This paper aimed to seek for the methodology for studies on Chinese rural societies. The subject of the consideration is the "Hu Wen-hai incident" occurred in a coal-mining town of Sanxi in 2001.
Jia Zhan-ke handles this incident in a film 『A Touch of Sin』(2013). In this film, this incident goes through many aesthetic transformations. This paper traces the meaning of it to explain the current problems with Chinese countries by coming back and forth between the film and the actual event.
The conclusions are like following. The ‘Hu Wen-hai event’ shows the essence of the current problems with Chinese countries. The core is a kind of game happening between rural societies and state. Understanding the transformation/formation of this game would be a shortcut to approach rural societies.
