This study examines David Henry Hwang’s search for subjectivity in the process of adapting Flower Drum Song (2002), of which the original work Flower Drum Song (1957) by C. Y. Lee was adapted as a musial by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1958 and a movie by Henry Koster in 1961. This study also reveals the success factors of Hwang’s musical as it became a famous Broadway musical as well as a Tony Award winning work. Flower Drum Song plays a role of a stepping stone to gain a popularity once again after M. Butterfly (1988) and has lead him to be a minor writer. In order to reveal the success factors in Flower Drum Song, this study investigates similarities and differences between Hwang’s musial and previously reinterpreted musicals. The main factor of the success was changes in representations of Asian-American women characters. Through Hwang’s appropriating their subjectivities, he finally decided the way to find his subjectivity as a minor Asian American.
