The objective of this study is to investigate the information effect of the voluntary disclosure of technological innovation by types of technological innovation, namely, in-bound transfer, out-bound transfer and technological alliance. In particular, we investigate whether the voluntary disclosure of technological innovation sends to the market a positive signal of increase in future investment in innovation or sends a negative signal of managerial opportunism. We find that accruals quality as well as discretionary accruals quality influences the long-term performance of the disclosure of technological innovation suggesting that the long-term performance of the disclosure of technological innovation declines as managerial opportunism increases. This effect appears to be more pronounced in the disclosure of in-bound technology transfer than in the other disclosure types. In addition, we find that, in case of seasoned equity offering following the disclosure of in-bound technology transfer, firms that show high managerial opportunism experience a larger decline in long-term performance than firms that do not. Our study suggests that the long-term firm performance after the disclosure of technological innovation depends on the past managerial opportunism.
