A field experiment was conducted in the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur, Bangladesh over the period from March to September, 2006 for the preparation of peat-based efficient Bradyrhizobium inoculants as biofertilizer for the cultivation of indigo (Indigofera tinctoria L.). For this, six isolates of Bradyrhizobium (HSTU-IR₂, HSTU-IR₃, HSTU-IR₄, HSTUIR9, HSTU-IR10 and HSTU-IR14) were collected from Soil Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Soil Science, HSTU, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. Using these isolates peat-based inoculant were prepared. Performances of these inoculants were tested inoculating them on the indigo plants. Out of the six inoculants three inoculants (HSTU-IR₃, HSTU-IR₂ and HSTU-IR₄) showed better performance with respect to nodulation, growth, yield and N fixation by the indigo plants. Therefore, the three inoculants i.e., HSTU-IR₃, HSTU-IR₂ and HSTU-IR₄ may be considered as promising for the preparation of biofertilizers for the cultivation of indigo. This study has practical implications to soil fertility management which would create significant impact on sustainable crop production.
