In this study, total mercury (TM) concentration in various aquatic systems in Korea were measured in April, July, and October, 2016. The average TM concentration was 0.67± 04 ng L-1, showing the highest values in July. Increased TM concentrations in July was possibly caused by direct wet deposition and large run-off due to the intense rainfall events. There was no statistical difference for TM concentration among lakes, rivers, and ocean. The coefficient of variation (CV) of TM concentration was relatively high in lakes while low CV were observed in rivers and oceans. Correlation coefficients of TM concentrations with various parameters including meteorological factors and typical water quality indexes were calculated in order to identify the influencing factors on TM variation. For both lakes and rivers, rainfall depth showed the highest correlation coefficient with TM concentration. TM concentration in lakes showed the significant positive correlations with suspended solid (SS), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which were not observed in rivers. These results suggest that TM in rivers was mainly affected by precipitation depth while TM in lakes showed similar trend with typical water quality indexes.
