The existing engineering support systems in the shipbuilding industry have very complicated information delivery systems. Thus, it is required to develop methods that can inquire about real-time engineering information in several plans, shapes of parts, BOM (Bill of Material), and schedules, and cooperate their tasks in extensive production spots. Therefore, this research is to develop an engineering information support system based on mobile device in order to offer a reasonable solution that can inquiry about engineering information and cooperate in inter-processes in real time. Because the marine shipbuilding industry is based on job-order production, owner’s requirements, designs in the shipbuilding yard, and engineering information in the production process are subject to change very frequently. The existing information service systems are generally served by drawing sheets or desk-top computers. Such engineering information causes serious problems which have considerable uncertainties and gaps in information owing to spatial and temporal differences. The proposed system in this paper is to develop a real-time engineering support system which is based on mobile device. It combines the technologies of information visibility and communications in order to get over the problems mentioned above and to seek solutions in the paperless engineering processes.
