This paper presents a comparative study on ancient history between Korea and Vietnam. The present study proposed a couple of topics around the formation of state and international relations and contemplated over their tasks. As it was pointed out early on, Korea and Vietnam share similar historical experiences. It is the same in the study of ancient history, where the attention was focused on the formation and development of ancient states. It was part of efforts to overcome the colonial viewpoint that defined the history with identity and heteronomy. The academic circles of both the nations emphasized the development and independence of their respective histories and promoted the further rational understanding of their respective literature materials based on archeological researches. Given that the colonial historical studies were based on the theory of unilinear development, they can be overcome in a true sense through a pluralistic view of development. That is, there should be inquiries into ancient states in their various forms. That will be one of attention points and tasks in comparative studies.
Appearing in the ancient histories of Korea and Vietnam, many countries accepted the installation and tribute orders of various dynasties in the central plain of China. There were, however, differences between the form and truth of international relations. The differences between the form and truth of installation and tribute systems become more prominent when the international relations between the ancient states and the dynasties in the central plain of China are compared between the two regions. It should be reminded, however, that most of major literature materials about the ancient histories of Korea and Vietnam were created by the dynasties in the central plain of China, which means it is difficult to accept the similarities between them in the literature materials as they are. There is a need to criticize the historical materials with their narrative structure and logic kept in mind. It is also needed to focus on the realistic issues such as the trade rights in researches on the war histories.
As it is widely known, differences are as important as similarities in comparative studies. The characteristics of each history can be explained only after their differences are understood. Comparative studies on ancient history between Korea and Vietnam will be able to make a contribution even to the research of more universal history by shedding light on the similarities and differences between them.

이 글은 한국 · 베트남 고대사의 비교연구를 위해 마련되었다. 국가형성과 국제관계를 중심으로 몇 가지 주제를 제시하고, 과제를 생각해 보았다.
일찍부터 지적된 것처럼 한국과 베트남은 역사적 경험이 유사하다. 고대사 연구의 역사도 마찬가지였다. 고대국가 형성 · 발전에 관심이 집중되었는데, 이는 그 역사를 정체성 · 타율성으로 규정했던 식민주의적 시각을 극복하기 위한 노력의 일환이었다. 양국학계 모두 자국사의 발전성과 독자성을 강조하였고, 고고학적 연구를 바탕으로 문헌사료에 대한 한층 합리적인 이해를 도모하였다. 그런데 식민주의 역사학이 단선적인 발전론에 기반했다고 보면, 그의 진정한 극복을 위해서는 다원적인 발전상, 즉 고대국가의 다양한 형태를 탐색해야 한다고 생각한다.
한국 · 베트남 고대사 속의 여러 나라는 중원지역의 여러 왕조의 책봉 · 조공 질서를 수용했다. 그런데 국제관계의 형식과 실상은 차이가 있었다. 두 지역의 고대 국가와 중원왕조의 국제관계를 비교해 보면, 책봉 · 조공 제도의 형식과 실상에 차이가 난다는 점이 한층 분명히 드러난다. 다만 한국 · 베트남 고대사와 관련된 주요 문헌사료의 대부분은 중원왕조의 측에서 작성되었다는 점을 주의해야 한다. 문헌사료에 나타난 유사점을 그대로 받아들여서는 곤란한 것이다. 사료의 서술구조와 논리를 염두에 두고, 사료비판을 할 필요가 있다. 전쟁사 연구와 관련하여서는 교역권과 같은 현실적인 문제에 주목해야 한다고 생각한다.
주지하디시피 비교연구에서는 공통점만 아니라 차이점이 중요하다. 차이점이 해명되어야 각 역사의 특징을 설명할 수 있기 때문이다. 공통점과 함께 차이점이 밝혀질 때, 양국 고대사의 비교연구는 보다 보편적인 역사 연구에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
