The haptic has long been marginalized by Western philosophy in favor of vision, a marginalization that, with some notable exceptions, continued during the heyday of modernism in both the artworld and art education. Following a definition of the haptic as a combination of tactile, kinesthetic, and spatial perception, we argue that consideration of the haptic must now be placed back on the art educational agenda. In contemporary fine art haptic perception is now a major element, and it is also important in many sites of the kind of popular visual culture that art education is now embracing. Recent attempts by some art educators to redress the privileging of the visual and to incorporate the haptic are reviewed.
