The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between cohesion and coherence in the texts written by Korean learners, and to suggest implications for current writing education focusing on cohesion. For this purpose, this paper analyses the cohesion by cohesive tie of substitution and conjunction, and the coherence was evaluated from a holistic scoring.
The results of the study indicated that there was no correlation between cohesion and coherence in the texts written by Korean learners, but there was a low negative correlation between substitution and coherence. The more often you use a substitution for cohesion, the more likely it will hinder the formation of coherence. And elaboration one of the functions of conjunction and coherence have a positive correlation. Only the elaboration -adding details about stated above - affects coherence formation.
Therefore Korean writing education should move toward producing text with coherence that forms a semantic network rather than focusing on precise use of grammar and connection of grammatical devices.
