This paper investigates recent drastic changes of the Islamic world after Arab Spring, and proposes missiological approaches relevant to a new missional environment of the region. By evaluating the consequences of Arab Spring in the Islamic societies in the Middle East and North Africa, four distinctive factors are identified as the components of a new missional environment of the region; 1) ongoing political conflicts and regional instability among different groups for various reasons including Sunni-Shia conflict and civil wars; 2) sharp contrast of ideological conflicts and strifes within Islam, especially between Islamic modernism (seeking an Islamic society compatible with the western civilization) and Islamic revival or reformation (seeking an Islamic society which is established solely upon the Sharia law and Sunnah to restore the ideal Islamic Umma community); 3) a new realization of civil power by Arab public, especially among young generation; and 4) the increasing integration of Gulf Arab countries into the global market and their economic growth.
This newly developed missional environment of the region provides challenges and new opportunities for the Kingdom missions. This paper proposes five directions for a transforming missions relevant to such a new circumstance: 1) a bold and proactive evangelistic approach toward the young Muslims because of their openness and hunger for a new alternative in their worldview; 2) developing a deepened partnership with the majority world Christian missions including “missionaries from below” (foreign workers and housemaids in Arab world); 3) developing a biblical inter-faith dialogue with Muslims; 4) developing a holistic missions strategy for the Arab world; and 5) supporting and strengthening Arab evangelical churches and Christians that have been living with Muslim communities integrally. Although these proposals are nothing new to the missionary efforts, a changed circumstance of the Middle East and North Africa demands a renewed emphasis on these factors. The writer also emphasises the importance of the missionary fundamentals such as prayer movement for Islamic world, passionate heart for evangelism and church planting among Muslims, and Christ-like humility of missionaries among fellow Christians and Muslim nations.
