This presentation will share experience of CSAGA in using the education-entertainment strategy (Edutainment) as an approach to tackle sexual violence against women in Vietnam. It also present practices and lessons learned from the project “Don’t cry alone” to appeal actions to protect sexual and reproductive health rights of women and children in Vietnam.
Sexual violence against women is a serious violation of women’s sexual and reproductive rights. In Vietnam, sexual violence is prevalent and hidden in silence. Therefore, sexual violence have not been recognized and prioritized. According to the National Study on Violence against Women in Vietnam in 2010, 10% ever married women experienced sexual violence in their life time. Most of victims kept silence and acceptance without seeking support from the family and authority.
There are many reasons for women to keep silence and sexual violence prevalence. Firstly, the public still impose much prejudice and stigma against survivors of sexual violence. Mass media in Vietnam still reinforces this prejudice, hence, sexual violence is still pondered as a behind-the-door stories of each Vietnamese Family. Secondly, many women think that meeting the sex demands of their husbands or their partners are their obligation and responsibilities. Hence, they accept the fact and cannot refuse sex when they do not want. Thirdly, support services system, particularly healthcare services, are not ready and reliable to provide healthcare for survivors of sexual violence.
This presentation will examine the current situation of sexual violence, how to break silence on sexual violence, barriers and opportunities for sexual violence prevention and control, whether the edutainment strategy is an alternative to tackle sexual violence in Vietnam, and further implications for social activists and feminists in Asia. This presentation also shares some experience of CSAGA to break silence on sexual violence through using social media like the facebook page “Love and freedom” and using documentary films and other edutainment forms to attract attention of the public and policy makers, appealing them to take actions to end sexual violence.
