Human Trafficking is heinous crime and is a major form of violence in Nepal. There is no integrated data in regards to trafficking. Data of Police varies from the data of National Human Rights Institution. Initially, Human Trafficking was conflated with sex trafficking and Nepal was the source where women were sold to brothels in India. Trend and dimension have changed. Today, Nepal is not the only source country but also transit and destination country. Women and girls were only thought to be trafficked but today men and boys are also trafficked for various purpose. Nepal has come up with the legislation that is said to be one of the best legislation in South Asia but implementation is problem.
Internal trafficking is on rise today. Women in the entertainment sectors are exploited and there are no proper mechanisms to address their problems; children are bound to work in the brick factories and kidney trafficking has emerged as one of the forms of trafficking. Fraud marriage has also become means of trafficking in Nepal.
Various initiatives have been carried out from Government as well as Non-Government side but these initiatives have not been able to adequately address trafficking. This study will present the situation of trafficking in Nepal; its changing dimensions, its intersection with foreign employment, rules and structures to deal with it, challenges and its situation during the post-earthquake situation and way forward. Along with that, it will also present role Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD) had played in combating trafficking.
