This paper is based on a qualitative, action-oriented research on “Empowering Single Mothers through Entrepreneurship” (2011 - 2014) funded by the Division of Industry and Community Network (BJIM), University Sains Malaysia. This paper is also written from a personal experience. This project was an initial attempt by the Centre for Research on Women and Gender (KANITA) to understand the issues of single mothers from a gender perspective in Malaysia generally and in Penang specifically. About 20 single mothers were recruited not only for data collection but they were given specific training based on the needs and issues identified with the aim of facilitating and developing their entrepreneurship skills. It was found at the beginning of the project that single mothers suffered from loneliness, and were emotionally tortured by the negative, stereotyped perception of the community who saw them as ‘antagonist character’, ones who were seen as ‘homebreakers’, searching for easy options in life and rather ‘loose’ in their character. This led to low self-esteem and lack of confidence, making it difficult for them to access resources for their income. Intervention programme that were conducted by KANITA produced positive results: two single mother’s associations were formed, several women ventured into businesses, and they developed confidence in public speaking, became more knowledgeable and skillful in the activities of their choices. This paper will also highlight the challenges faced by single mothers and by KANITA as a research centre. This action oriented research project had an impact not only on the single mothers but also on me, personally, as one who was directly involved in interacting with the women.
