The economic literature often argues the existence of a positive relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic growth, commonly recommended to emerging countries. In this article we analyze the situation of a surface coal mine in northern Colombia, which is of interest because coal mining is a sector that has been shown to be highly attractive for FDI in recent years. We compare the situation of the coal mine with historical experiences of similar situations contained in the folk literature. The comparisons show convergences in the social tensions between transnational corporations, their employees and the environment. The institutional fragility of the state and the primacy of capital in these areas, suggests that after the boom a decline ensues, as known from historical accounts of Ciénaga (Macondo) and Putumayo.
