Objective: The aim to this study is to investigate effective functional factors which are one of quality factors on the interaction between the user and smartphone home screen through usability test. Background: Quality factors, which influence the interaction between the user and smartphone, are consisted of three factors – user factors, context factors, and system factors. These factors need to be considered when implementing a well-designed smartphone interface. Since diverse functions have applied to smartphone, and most of these functions can manipulate through the home screen menu, it is important to provide the proper home screen menu structure to the user. This study focused on the interaction between the user and smartphone home screen menu, and investigated influencing functional factors, which were considered as system factors, with home screen functions. Method: Four tasks were applied in this experiment as the functional factors. Task 1 of searching App., task 2 of deleting App., and task 3 of creating folder were relatively simple task. However, task 4 of adding/deleting home screen page was more complex and heterogeneous than other tasks. Depending on four tasks, four smartphones which were applied to single layered and double layered home screen menu structure were compared through the within-subject design. A subjective rating of the level of intuitivity, efficiency, ease of use, and overall preference were recorded using a Likert-type rating scale. In addition, the task completion time and error rate were measured. Results: When performing simple tasks (task 1, 2 and 3), the user’s response to the single layered home screen menu was better than double layered menu. However, in the complex and heterogeneous task (task 4), various responses were presented. Conclusion: The task complexity and heterogeneity which was the feature of functional factor was the main attributing factor determining the user’s preference and performance on the interaction between the user and smartphone home screen. Application: The results of the analysis of functional factor on the interaction between the user and smartphone home screen might help to implement a well-designed smartphone home screen menu.
