Objective: This study aims to develop a guideline of target selection methods with a gaze pointer for virtual reality (VR) devices. Background: As VR devices become better and cheaper, those interfaces have received much attention from both academic and practical perspectives. However, few studies have been conducted on usability of gaze interactions. Method: A total of twenty-four participants carried out the experiment. They were asked to gaze highlighted targets, which would be automatically selected after the predefined time interval (i.e., 1s, 1.5s, and 2s). They were given a controller attached to a VR headset and were also required to select highlighted targets with the controller. Task completion time and the number of errors were measured while doing the tasks. Results: The ANOVA and post-hoc analysis revealed that a direct target selection method with a controller was better than target selection methods using gaze pointers in terms of task completion time. Conclusion: As for the target selection method using a gaze pointer, a one-second time interval would be recommended in the aspect of minimizing task completion time. Application: The results of this study are expected to help interaction designers develop target selection interfaces for VR devices.
