In the Avataṃsaka sūtra, Vairocana Buddha reveals ideas that develop Sakyamuni Buddha’s teachings of early Buddhism to a universal principle of dependent arising. Sudhana’s quest for Buddhahood and the Vows of Samantabhadra complete the ideas of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra that the enlightenment of Vairocana Buddha should be accomplished through acts of practitioners. In Esoteric Buddhism, the realization of Buddhahood is represented by the Sarvajñā of Vairocana Buddha whose ideological foundation is based on the tenets of the Yogacara-Mādhyamika School. The Mantra Gate of Esoteric Buddhism that presented refined expedients for accomplishing practices were understood by Chinese masters whose establishment of the unique theory of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism influenced Korean Buddhism. Silla Buddhism adopted the ideas of Huayan and Esoteric Buddhism whose ideas contributed to unifying Silla society in overcoming the nation’s difficulties at that time.
