The idiomatic complement may appear in the negative construction, regardless of whether the accusative or nominative case is attached to it. On the other hand, the idiomatic subject cannot appear in the negative sentence. The aims of this paper are to examine such an asymmetry between the idiomatic subject and complement in the negative construction and to delve into why the asymmetry occurs. Neg’s blocking is available within the idiomatic domain except when it is an idiomatic meaning-connoted constituent. The idiomatic domains of the idiomatic theme and subject are V’ and TP, respectively. In order to explain such a phenomenon, I argue that the feature [Neg] on the head Neg should block [Tense] on T from merging with the verb root, which induces the idiomatic meaning to disappear. That is, the negation feature has a non-zero phonological exponent only when it is within the idiomatic domain.
