This study examined what types of local information individuals desire and how such desire is associated with the reliance on local news media such as local broadcast TV and local dailies. Online surveys were administered in South Korea and the U.S. The data revealed that, in general, desire for local news was significantly higher in the U.S. than in Korea. Specifically, U.S. people were relatively more interested in hard news including local government, politics, economy, and environmental issues, whereas Korean people were relatively more interested in soft news including local travel, leisure, and sports. The data also showed that interests in local government, accidents and events, and sports led to the reliance on local broadcast TV in the U.S., whereas interests in local business, accidents and events, traffic and transportation, and sports led to the reliance on the media in Korea. Additionally, interests in local government, real estate, environmental issues, accidents and events, and sports led to the reliance on local dailies in the U.S., whereas interests in local politics, business, and living expenses led to the reliance on the media in Korea. Findings and subsequent implications were discussed.
