Indoor air quality is an important factor for the health of young children and senior citizens, who stay longer indoors and have weaker immune system than younger adults. In spite the fact that young children and senior citizens stay long in day nurseries and senior citizens centers respectively, there are a few studies on indoor air quality of these welfare facilities. Especially, investigation of indoor air quality for senior citizens centers are very rare.
In this study, we focused on finding ways to maintain and manage safe indoor air quality in day nurseries and senior citizens centers, and suggesting policies to promote improvement of indoor air quality in the welfare facilities. In oder to do this, we reviewed current rules and regulations, policies, and projects. The measurement data of pollutants in day nurseries and senior citizens centers were collected and analyzed. Also, surveys of 100 senior citizens visiting frequently senior citizens centers and 101 staff working for senior citizens centers were conducted to assess perception and management behavior of indoor air quality in the facilities. In addition, a survey of 27 experts who have experiences of investigation of indoor air quality in day nurseries was carried out.
Consequently, suggestions for indoor air quality management in day nurseries and senior citizens centers were made. The suggestions include education and promotion plans for the staff of day nurseries and senior citizens in order to lead them to manage indoor air quality on their own. Also, the public support systems for indoor air quality management of the facilities were presented.
