Report Errors
Chinese capital that entered Korean drama production companies and entertainment companies from 2014 to March, 2016 amounts to over 816.4 billion won. Through literature research, case studies centering on drama produced with Chinese capital, and in-depth interviews, this study tried to empirically find out how Chinese capital that entered Korea are used in domestic contents companies and what kind of influence it has. Also, through scenario method, it expected the future of Korea’s drama contents industry since the influx of Chinese capital and considered ways to use the influx of Chinese capital as an opportunity factor. The result showed that Chinese capital were offering stable foundation for production, joint production with China, and opportunities to enter Chinese market and by securing copyright, production companies had the positive effect of being in the superior position. However, unstable factors still exists if Chinese capital is withdrawn and there were side effects such as the new competition between broadcasting stations and drama production companies to get the benefit of Chinese capital. The most important issue to make the influx of Chinese capital an opportunity to enter the global contents market is to maintain competitiveness of domestic contents. Strategies for constantly raising talented people and minor markets that can raise new workforce are needed. Drama producers should try to secure copyright and make an active effort to branch out to Chinese and other global markets, and the governments should offer practical policy supports to enhance the competitiveness of contents companies and strengthen bargaining power against China. It is also required to diversify markets targeting post-China era and to change the perspective of seeing China as a partner.
