Waste cutting oil is getting more popular in the metal-working industry. However, Waste water-soluble cutting oil is an excellent environment for the growth of a large variety of microorganisms. The growth of micro-organism deteriorates the fluids, and causes many problems in metalworking processes. In this work, UV-light(254nm) was used for the purification of waste cutting oil which was microbially contaminated obtained from the metal cutting unit. Characteristics of microorganism and variations of the physical properties of waste water-soluble cutting oil by UV-irradiation were investigated. Pseudomonas sp., B acillus sp., Comamonas T estosteroni, A cinetobacter haemolyticus, Bordetella bronchiseptica were froud in water soluble cutting oil. Among theses, Pseudomonas sp. Is the most frequency of the microorganisms. According to experimental results, the properties of the original waste water soluble cutting oil were pH 8.0, Viscosity 14.7cP, Specific density 0.996, SS 40.574mg/ℓ, CODcr 44,550ppm, TOC 24,260ppm. However, UV-irradiation showed that pH 9.25, Viscosity 1.04cP, Spesific density 0.993, SS 0.115mg/ℓ, CODcr 9,900ppm, TOC 26,287ppm and from 90% to 99.9% of the microorganism was annihilated within 30minutes, 120minutes respectely. The results from this study indicate clearly that UV-irradiation is able to a as useful method for microorganism annihilating in waste cutting oil.
