The tertiary architectural education in Korea was implemented under the Japanese ruling, in early 1900’s, as a part to the engineering discipline. Due to this, architectural design exercise was not taken as main center-post of architectural education until the "accreditation" occur in early 2000"s. It is obvious that some of the major positive outcomes of having "architectural accrediting system’ were being able to amend ‘engineering emphasis’ in architectural education across the nation, by enforcing design studio of the study programs. Also, by having the accreditation, each school has developed own educational goal with system of self-assessments monitoring its outcome. However, due to some of the unique dynamics of undergraduate school system of the nation, the idea of accreditation forced practically all undergraduate programs to become 5-year Bachelor’s degree, which has impeded ‘architectural study’ to become liberal, general education for much broader perspective.
In order to respond properly for our future of architectural education and accreditation in Korea, we must acknowledge the current challenges and try to resolve them first. In fact, the academics and the profession must initiate finding ways to correct this issue by accepting the positive outcomes that ‘accreditation system’ has brought to academics, while developing practical resolution to alleviate the problem. In addition, the conditions and procedures of the KAAB must continue to evolve to promote educating performance-based comprehensive knowledge with problem solving skills, rather than identifying and listing of knowledge components. Also it must deal with future needs and transformation in architectural education that will inevitably occur in foreseeable future.
