Lee Kwangsoo published Heosangjeon, which is originnated from Yeolhailgi by Park Jiwon, serially in Dongahilbo in 1920’s. This work displays a hero trying to reform the given society, which is one of the most important figures in other works of Lee Kwangsoo. Especially this work focuses on the ideal leader figure and construction of an ideal community. Most researches on Heosaengjeon have emphasized a nationalistic features in the work, but if we consider the preface of this work written by its own author, we can interpret this work from a different perspective. If we locate this work in the contexts of 1920’s, we can observe that this work had absorbed some anarchic features which were not seen in previous researches.
Anarchism is a political philosophy that advocates stateless societies often defined as self-governed voluntary insitutions. In early 1920’s, East Asia accepted anarchism with communism altogether as ‘new discourses.’ In case of Chosun, mass medium played big role in spreading these discourses, and Dongahilbo was the most important media. Anarchism in 1920’s Chosun had Anarcho-communism in its core as Japan and China. Lee Kwangsoo was not involved in Anarchism directly, but he captured critical discourse changes of the age and figured them by writing a novel.
He depicted an ideal community based on anarchic principles in Heosaengjeon. Heosaeng abolished class distinctions and private property, official judicial power and encouraged making self-governed community based on mutual agreement among its members. In the construction of this kind of anarchic society, people need not a leader but an mediator. Therefore after the completion of building the community, Heosaeng leaves it voluntarily.
This narrative structure shows us one of the most interesting junctions in Lee Kwangsoo’s early works. It focused on the operating principles itself, not on the ideal leader who learns them.
