The purpose of this paper is to analyze Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man in terms of protagonist's subjectivity after he overcomes invisibility. Ellison expresses black folklore and culture in Invisible Man. Ellison tries to criticize the reality in which Afro-Americans are stereotyped through distorted images of Sambo or beasts by using the symbol of invisibility. The protagonist in this work enters a college with dreams that he will accomplish his goal in the white world. But he experiences his limit through several adventures. The protagonist begins to realize his invisibility while internalizing the dominant powers he faces in a white society. Ellison's protagonist gains subjectivity through historical writing and self-meditation. Ellison acknowledges that the conflict is also the element of American reality. Therefore, he embodies dream and vision by acknowledging the problem of reality and diversity. He depicts the protagonist's experiences, including racial identity. Also, Ellison thinks that the individual can not gain subjectivity unless he ironically accept his invisibility in this work.
