This study identified the educational needs of South Korean university students majoring in sports-related fields. The research data was utilized to develop an effective communicative Sports English Education model. A total of 133 participants responded to a questionnaire designed to extrapolate their self-perceived L2 instructional needs. The principal results obtained from this study were: The majority of participants reported that Sports English teaching is essential and differentiates from general English language education; many wished to receive Sports English teaching with a focus on speaking and listening; the learners also had a desire to be given practical Sports English teaching focusing on activities such as role play and simulation, and so on. Based on these and other research findings, a communicative Sports English instructional model was developed. It includes the following components: English instruction for Occupational Purposes, Sports English teaching with the aim of improving L2 communication; Task-based English language instruction; and Job analysis of the field.
