The purpose of this study is to analyze two women characters, who are Esta and Roberta in Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. They are tragic creatures of the times. The naturalist theory is this: men are conditioned and dominated by environment, instinct, or chance. So, it is hard for men to succeed, for he is doomed to destroy in spite of his effort. It can be said that the reason why men cause destruction is that individuals are products of their milieu they live. In An American Tragedy, Dreiser combined his conception of the individual as a seeking, hungering mechanism of desire with an indictment of those aspects of American society that encouraged greed, the lust for power, and social and economic inequality. This article studied two women characters, Esta and Roberta. They are the victims of American society and milieu. Esta, who had given herself to a seducer who promised her clothes and the glamour of travel, and then abandoned her when she became pregnant, is attracted to love, to comfort. Within her was a chemism of dreams that was beyond the understanding of her parents. She is motivated by the force of that chemistry and became the victim of desire. Roberta is also deserted and destroyed by sexuality in the society. It is Roberta Alden, an employee at the Griffiths factory, who first fulfills Clyde's dreams of sexual pleasure. But her lover, Clyde, sees her merely as an obstacle that must be removed from his upward path, and killed her at last. As a result, Roberta also became the victim of sexuality.
