Dramatic monologue poetry reached the height of its popularity during the Victorian Era, but some critics see the fingerprints of the dramatic monologue on later modernist and contemporary poetry such as Eliot, Plath and Berryman. Berryman's The Dream Songs is dramatic monologues in the inclusive sense in which we have been using the term: the speaker, named Henry, is explicitly set apart from the poet. Henry's speech, while incorporating colloquial elements, is difficult, shifting, and fragmented. So, The Dream Songs might be credited with re-naturalizing the dramatic monologue. By incorporating slang, by seeming unselectively to represent the more or less random movements of human consciousness, and most of all by restaging the gap between poet and speaker as a natural function of human self-consciousness, Berryman presses the dramatic monologue back in the direction of personally direct, sincere speech. Therefore The Dream Songs holds the key to a new understanding of Berryman and his poetry.
