Even though Herman Melville was understood as a major moral and political commentator of his age, New Historicism, which satisfies the current desire to make moral claims by evaluating literary works in terms of the author’s presumed political orientations, unveils its limitations of unduly limiting Herman Melville’s aestheticism. Herman Melville’s aesthetic intention is distinguished in his romantic otherness which is inextricably bound by human being’s individual will of growth and Emersonian self-reliance. To create the romantic otherness, Melville uniquely combines the abandonment of the Biblical others with their unyielding romantic intent on supernatural achievement. Ahab’s romantic otherness enables him to revive as the sun revives when he is dismembered in mid winter by a leviathan, the absolute power. Ishmael makes decisive contributions to Ahab’s romantic otherness by sharing his self-reliance and individual will of growth in his abandoned identity to encompass every phase of otherness that brings together all varieties and opposites.
