Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption is a film produced in 1994 based on Stephen King's novel, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The film stresses the importance of freedom and hope through the experience of Andy Dufresne and the fear of the “institutionalized” through the experiences of Brooks and Red. The film proves that freedom is not simply given to the people who have been "institutionalized" and that hope is “the best of things” that enables people to be free. The main background of the film is the Shawshank State Prison in Maine and a beach along the Pacific Ocean near Zihuatanejo in Mexico. In particular, Shawshank Prison itself is a metaphor mirroring the dark side of the outside world. Zihuatanejo is a place of hope where Andy and Red enjoy freedom. Freedom and hope are key words in the film. In this paper, the meaning of freedom and hope, and the problem of the "institutionalized" will be discussed, with special attention to such symbols as the prison, the stone hammer, the music, and the posters of actresses. The salvation motif will also be discussed focusing on the process of Andy's escape from the prison.
