Forrest Gump, a 1994 film directed by Robert Zemeckis, depicts the life of Forrest Gump, who is a simple man with a low I.Q., through various symbols, motives, and his accidental experiences. The film presents negative aspects in the history of America from the 1960's through the 1980's through the eyes of 'stupid' who cannot fully realize the significance of the historical events. It follows Forrest Gump's meeting JFK, President Johnson, and President Nixon. His experiences are accidental and fictional. The film examines the relationship between destiny and individuals through these accidental meetings and events. The film begins with a feather falling to the feet of Forrest who is sitting at a bus stop wearing muddy shoes. He picks up the feather and puts it in a book in his travel bag. The journey motif is presented by various symbols such as shoes, a bus, a ship, a travel bag, and a feather. The feather is a potent symbol depicting the life journey of Forrest. His life is accidental like a feather floating on a breeze. A running motif is a device to intensify the journey motif. Forrest runs across the country without any “particular reason.” He cannot understand the reason why he is running, just as he practices altruistic love without any particular reason. Forrest does not know if men have a destiny, or if they are “all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze.” Life is like “a box of chocolates,” and Forrest never knows what he is going to get in the box. However, he has always done his best and accomplished greater things than anyone could have imagined. He becomes a football star, a ping-pong star, and a Vietnam War hero. Everything is accidental. The film proves that love is more important than any other ability of man. Life is a journey, and running is a metaphor of life in the film. This paper investigates the various symbols and motifs presented in the film. The meanings of the symbols will also be discussed.
